The School of History at the National Eisteddfod
Staff and students from the School of History, Welsh History and Archaeology will be busy with a range of activities at the Montgomeryshire and the Marches National Eisteddfod this year.
Monday (3 August) will see the launch of the Bangor-led Medieval history digital resources project on the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol stand at 12.00. Cerys Hudson from the School of History was the project officer who created these resources, under the guidance of Professor Huw Pryce and Dr Euryn Rhys Roberts. On the Monday as well, Professor Pryce will be delivering the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion lecture on ‘Cofio Glyndŵr’ (‘Remembering Glyndŵr’, Societies 1 at 13.00).
Throughout the week, the School of History will be gathering the recollections of alumni and former staff members of their experiences at Bangor for the oral history project ‘Bangor Stories’, which is led by Dr Andrew Edwards and Dr Mari Wiliam. On the Wednesday afternoon (5 August), some of our students and recent graduates - Sian Davenport, Ceri Owen, Anna Prysor Jones and Angharad Jones – will be at the Bangor University Reunion to collect stories from the past.
Also, on Wednesday Professor Prys Morgan will deliver a lecture for the Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates (ISWE), which is led by the Bangor team of Nia Powell, Einion Thomas and Dr Lowri Ann Rees. Professor Morgan’s topic will be ‘Dolobran a’i debyg: colli ac ailganfod plasau Cymru’ (‘Dolobran and its contemporaries: losing and rediscovering the mansions of Wales’, Bangor University stand, 12.45) Nia Powell will also be participating in the Ymryson y Beirdd, a leading poetry competition, during the week.
Dr Dinah Evans’s topic for her lecture to the Women’s Archive of Wales, on Friday morning, 7 August is ‘Torri Tir Newydd? Merched Cymru yn y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf’ (‘Breaking New Ground? The women of Wales in the First World War’, Societies 2 at 11.30). On the Friday as well there is an opportunity to see Fflur Elin, who graduated in History this summer, giving a presentation about the work of the Bangor Students’ Union (Bangor University stand at 15.30).
