Single or Joint Honours
Some students want to specialise in one subject and choose to study a single honours degree. However, if you want to keep your options open you can study two subjects by opting for a joint honours degree. You can do this by taking half your modules from one subject and half from another. This is possible with a variety of different subjects at Bangor.
If you choose to study a language as a joint honours degree your course may last for four years, with the third year being spent in an appropriate country.
Modules
To complete a degree course you will take modules (units of study) that add up to 360 credits over three years. If you study full time you take 120 credits in each year of study.
Semesters (terms)
The academic year is split into two semesters (terms). The final weeks of each semester (term) are set aside to give you time to revise and sit exams.
Placement Year
If you’ve chosen a course with a placement year, the structure of the University-based study is the same but your placement will take place between the second and the third year.
Lectures
You will learn most of the theory work in lectures. They are normally presentations by academic staff given to groups of students studying the same subject.
Seminars
Seminars are more informal teaching/discussion sessions in smaller groups and involve more interaction with the tutor.
Tutorials
In a tutorial you will meet with your tutor, either on your own or as a part of a small group. You may also need to prepare work to discuss or present.
Practical
Some courses are more practical and involve workshops or laboratory work. Practicals give you the opportunity to handle material described in the lectures, to use experimental techniques, and to make the connection between theory and practice. Practicals often include project work.
Field trips
You might also have the opportunity to undertake field work or visit relevant organisations or research establishments.
