Tobias wins best student paper award
Tobias Barthelmes gained the award for the best student technical paper at the Computer Graphics & Visual Computing 2021 (CGVC) conference, that took place over the 8-10th September 2021. The conference was split into several parts: two days of online talks, and the third day at University of Lincoln. CGVC has been a Eurographics supported event since 1983, when the first instance took place 28-29 March 1983 at University of York. The event has been twice hosted at Bangor University: once in 2007 and again in 2019
Tobias presented his paper “Where's Wally? A machine learning approach”. He has recently graduated with a 1st class honours degree in Computer Science, from Bangor University. Tobias’ paper presents research work that he did in his individual final year project. Tobias said “To solve the problem of trying to find Wally in the puzzle books ‘Where’s Wally’, I implemented and evaluated different computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) algorithms to find the best for this task. While Wally has glasses and wears a distinctive red and white shirt, each scenario presents many red herrings to increase the difficulty of the challenge.”

Dr Franck Vidal (Senior lecturer in Computer Science) and supervisor for Tobias’ project, said “It was a great honour to be awarded this accolade. Computer vision aims to give computers the ability to “see”, “analyse” and “understand” images. Finding Wally can be hard for a human being. Deriving a computer program to do so is even harder. Tobias worked extremely hard on his project, and this award demonstrates his knowledge and understanding of ML for completing a complex CV task. We have plans to take this work forward and apply the ideas to different application domains. It is also a pleasure to know that Tobias is pursuing this line of research as he is now starting a masters in AI for the next 2 years in Germany.”
