Intellectual Property (IP) and Commercialisation

Bangor University actively promotes exploitation of its research outputs.  This is frequently done through licensing of its IP to businesses and organisations. For more information please get in touch via commercialisation@bangor.ac.uk

In some cases, a new company may be set up to exploit the University’s research, teaching and knowledge transfer activities and in this case the IP is licensed to the new company.  In recent years the University has spun out several companies which are at different levels of development. Bangor University and the Independent Review of University Spinouts

Bangor University welcomes the Independent Review of University Spinouts. We are committed to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth through university spinouts.

In alignment with the recommendations of the Independent Review of University Spinouts, we are adopting a set of principles and practices designed to maximise the impact and success of our spinout activities while supporting our researchers, students, and the wider community. These include:

  • Design and embed innovation-friendly processes to support high quality spinout activity.
  • Clear communication of processes and timeframes for spinout company formation.
  • Alignment of equity allocation with sector expectations, with specific terms varying depending on the wider commercial deal.
  • Recognise and reward staff members who utilise commercial pathways to impact from research.
  • Support spinout development through training, internal investment, and opportunity development activities.

Bangor University will continue to review and adapt its strategy, policies, and processes for spinout in line with sector, and national, guidelines.
