About This Course
This is a part-time, level 7 short course delivered on our Bangor campus.
Who is this course for?
This short course is aimed at healthcare professional working in either the emergency department or minor injury environment i.e nurse, paramedic, physiotherapist or pharmacist.
Why study this course?
The focus of the module is in the development of skills and competency in a variety of areas such as patient assessment, common limb injuries, wounds including minor burns, suturing and wound closure, assessment of minor head injury, common ophthalmic injuries and conditions and insect, animal, and human bites.
Applicants must have the support of their manager and be permitted to practise under supervision in an appropriate area as an emergency practitioner. Therefore, the applicant must have the agreement of a suitable supervisor (e.g. an experienced EP or doctor before applying).
How long does this course take to complete?
This part-time short course runs over 7 months. Candidates will be required to attend 12 taught days on campus on the following dates:

- 1.5 hour unseen exam

Course Content
What will you study on this course?
This module aims to strengthen and develop competence in emergency practitioners in order to enhance and optimise patient care. A variety of areas reflecting the diverse nature of minor injury management are covered including trauma, mental health, minor injuries and contemporary professional issues.
The module is designed to facilitate and guide the student to care effectively and efficiently for patients presenting with a range of conditions and injuries and aims to build on existing knowledge and skills to be knowledgeable practitioners in the dynamic field of emergency and unscheduled care provision.
The module will guide students to develop critical thinking skills and translate their knowledge and skills into the clinical setting to meet the patient’s needs.
On completion of the course, the students will be able to:
- Appraise and critically evaluate the legal and ethical issues involved in patient management and through advanced practice.
- Assess, diagnose, manage, treat or refer patients presenting with a minor injury appropriately without medical supervision.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the underlying anatomy of both normal function and common minor injuries.
- Display a mastery of physical examination techniques and be able to critically evaluate the process

Applicants must fulfil the following criteria to be considered eligible for this course:
- Healthcare professional, and
- Work in the minor injury/emergency department environment or have permission to work within either environment.

After creating an account, you will see a homepage with several tabs:

When a section is complete, a ‘tick’ symbol will appear below it.
- Click on ‘Non-graduating applications / Stand alone Modules’, then select ‘Non-graduating Postgraduate’.
- In the next section, select Non-Graduating Taught Modules in Health(NGGT/HEALTH) Click Save and Continue.
- On the next page, the default for the first question is Full Time. You need to change this to ‘Part time’:
- You now need to input the module code. Emergency Practitioner: the code is NHS:4376. This section must be completed for your application to be processed.
- You also need to state the start date. Please make your selection, then click ‘Save and Continue’.
- IMPORTANT: You do not need to write a personal statement to apply for this course. Instead, please upload the document including employment, experience and education information that you have created prior to starting the application that contains the name of your current employer, the number of years of experience you have, and your highest qualification to date. Click Save and continue.
You only need to enter the details of your highest qualification to date, e.g. if you have a postgraduate qualification, please only only include this.
You will be asked for evidence of the qualification. Please either upload a copy of your qualification if it's easily accessible, or upload the Word document again (that you prepared earlier).
