Overview

This module is based on the specification of core competences, procedural skills and conditions as identified within the Competence and Curriculum Framework for the Physician Associate.

The module will re-explore conditions explored in the first year and introduce the remaining conditions and competencies, particularly in matrix conditions 1B and 2A and 2B within the context of greater exposure to the clinical environment. The theme of holistic and patient centred care will be developed. This will be achieved by affording learning that is more individualised and reflective, facilitating a more focussed, bespoke learning experience for students allowing completion of studies

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Category C (50% -59%)A threshold student should have basic knowledge of the essential facts and key concepts presented in the module. The work is only based on lecture material. No evidence of wider reading or critical thinking.

-good -Category B (60%-69%)A good student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate. The work presented is largely based on the lecture material. Limited evidence of wider reading and critical analysis.

-excellent -Category A (70% - 100%):An excellent student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate, supported by additional reading and knowledge drawn from other modules. The work presents evidence of critical thinking. Especially for the higher A marks, critical analysis and wider reading is essential.

Learning Outcomes

• Appraise the role of a PA related to the clinical practice of that of a junior doctor but without authorisation to prescribe. Recognise the requirement for continuing professional development and progression to develop new skills and competencies.

• Critically request and analyse appropriate therapeutic procedures having considered the evidence base that informs the choice of procedures.

• Demonstrate a deeper understanding of the limits of their competencies and recognise when to refer to colleagues.

• Demonstrate the ability to critically manage both common and less common and more complex conditions, particularly where diagnosis and management decisions have been made by another. Understand the importance of continuity of care, hand-over and requirement of continual assessment and review.

• Develop an advanced ability to manage patients as a whole and prioritise management steps. Bringing together clinical skills to form overall assessments and judgements on patient management using a holistic approach to care.

• Have a detailed knowledge and understanding of clinical medicine in primary and secondary care as applied to patients across a wide spectrum of ages and have successfully completed all competencies and clinical assessments related to the PA curriculum.

• Recognise when the diagnosis of a less common and more complex condition requires input by a supervising doctor or clinical specialist and be able to manage the patient’s condition demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the principles of treatment as discussed with that clinician.
