Overview
The module will engage with a broad range of topics related to global health, including:
- The Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development Goals, Global Health Strategy and the Global Development Report
- Major communicable diseases affecting the global population, primarily HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and viral hepatitis
- Neglected diseases affecting resource-poor populations, primarily in the tropics
- Non-communicable diseases in the context of world major health issues, including their scale, determinants and trends
- Links between social, economic and health inequalities
- The impact of globalisation on human development and wellbeing due to trade, climate change, resource depletion and pollution
- The health needs and implications for refugees and asylum seekers, and the health consequences of human trafficking
- The health impacts of international conflicts, poverty, hunger and education services from a global perspective
- The consequences of climate change, resource depletion and pollution on health
- Organisations involved in international health matters eg United Nations, WHO, World Bank, Gates Foundation, OXFAM, Save the Children, UNICEF, and other national and international agencies

Assessment Strategy
-excellent -A- to A+ Grade: To achieve an ‘excellent pass’ on the module, students will be required to demonstrate a thorough and comprehensive understanding of global health, and the ability to critically analyse key topics in considerable depth. This will need to be supported by a comprehensive range of appropriate literature.
-good -B- to B+ Grade: To achieve a ‘good pass’ on the module, students will be required to demonstrate a broad understanding of global health and the ability to explore and analyse key topics in depth. This will need to be supported by a good range of appropriate literature.
-another level-C- to C+ Grade: To achieve a 'pass’ on the module, students will be required to demonstrate reasonable knowledge and understanding of key topics related to global health, and to demonstrate some evidence of critical analysis. This will need to be supported by appropriate literature.
Learning Outcomes
- Analyse the major health issues facing human populations globally.
- Critically discuss the impact of globalisation on human health and wellbeing.
- Critically evaluate the biological, geographical, environmental, political, economic and cultural factors associated with health and illness at a global level.
- Synthesise a critical understanding of international policies and initiatives, including those developed through the United Nations, WHO and other agencies, to address global health problems.
