Ofcom’s Research, Evidence and Evaluation Working Group
Ofcom, the regulator for the communications services, has appointed Professor Andrew McStay, Professor in Technology and Society at the School of History, Law and Social Sciences, to its Research, Evidence and Evaluation Working Group at a pivotal time when Ofcom is expanding its regulatory oversight of Artificial Intelligence, digital technologies, and online safety. Andrew will serve a 30-month term until September 2027, aligning with Ofcom's current strategy period.
Andrew takes up this position from Professor Vian Bakir, Professor in Journalism and Political Communications, also at the School of History, Law and Social Sciences, who is stepping down as her term comes to a close.
Andrew’s appointment comes as Ofcom assumes new powers under the Online Safety Act, which aims to make the UK the safest place to be online by tackling illegal and harmful content, protecting children, and ensuring greater accountability from digital platforms. His expertise will support Ofcom's evidence-based approach to AI regulation, online safety, and emerging digital challenges.
