As a University we unequivocally condemn the decision of the Russian government to encroach even further and invade Ukraine. The human, economic and environmental consequences of this action reflect that multilateralism and the rules-based world order are significantly undermined.
I reject all forms of oppression and am deeply distressed by the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. I know that many colleagues and students are also expressing increasing concern as the conflict and human catastrophe has escalated over the past few days. I want to express Bangor University’s support for the people of Ukraine.
The flow of refugees and asylum seekers triggered by the Ukraine war will continue to create political, social, economic and cultural dilemmas for a long time to come. It seems there has never been a more critical moment for universities as truth-seekers to demonstrate value to the public at large, not only of the knowledge they produce, but the value their research and teaching has for tackling the great challenges facing the world today – the consequences of war and conflicts, poverty, social injustice, and environmental disasters, to name a few – and for preparing young people for the ever-changing world ahead.
As a University standing for liberal values, human rights and the right to critical enquiry we must hope for an end to the invasion and the human tragedy it has caused. We call for a swift and peaceful resolution.
