All of the courses offered by the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures are four-year degrees and include a compulsory year abroad. You will spend your third year studying or working abroad before returning to Bangor for your final year. During your second year, you will be supported to choose how to spend the year abroad and guided through the application process. The year can be a little daunting at first, but we have dedicated support, both within the department and from the university’s International Education Centre, to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible.
There are three main options:
Studying at a partner university in a country where your language of choice is spoken. If you are studying two or three languages, you will split the year across two countries.
British Council Language Assistantship: this is paid role which gives you the opportunity to work in a school as an English language assistant for a year.
Work placement: you can work abroad for the year on an approved work placement. We don’t provide the placements, but we will support you to explore this option.

Study Abroad
In many ways, the year abroad is the highlight of a Modern Languages degree. It is an opportunity to really get know other cultures, improve your language skills, gain valuable life skills and foster your self-development. It can be a life-changing experience for many and opens up new opportunities for you after graduation. It makes a real difference to your CV and your employment prospects.
My favorite placement was Bologna, where I was studying for a semester and had the opportunity to improve my level of Italian as well as visiting lots of amazing places and ticking off a few things on my Bucket List.
