Academics give back this Christmas
Giving our time and volunteering within our local community is an important part of our societal values here at Bangor Business School. To this end, our Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management; Dr Clair Doloriert will be taking part in a Boxing Day Dip on Anglesey with her cousins; Bangor University Graduate Ceri Cochran, and Aled Roberts to raise much needed funds for St David’s Hospice, where Ceri is a Palliative Care Nurse (end of life) based in Holyhead.
St David’s Hospice is a local charity, caring for local people, delivering specialist care to adult patients with life-limiting illnesses or those in need of end of life care and their families. Every year, this touches the lives of over 1000 people within our local communities from across the counties of Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.
They offer 24 hour care, 365 days a year providing a clinical service alongside emotional, physical and spiritual support. In our Day Therapy Centres (Llandudno and Bangor), we provide patient care, bereavement, and counselling services, whilst our Inpatient Units (Llandudno and Holyhead) offer symptom control, respite, and end of life care.
This year it will cost over £5 million to run St David’s Hospice with just 9% of that figure coming from the Welsh Government and Local Health Board. The majority of this comes from community fundraising. None of these costs are passed to the patients, their families or carers, because St David’s Hospice care is free to all.
