Year 1
CCB-1001 Sgiliau Defnyddio’r Gymraeg 20 credits, Semester 1
The aim of this language module is to raise students' confidence to use Welsh both orally and in writing from the beginning of their time at university. There will be an emphasis on using the language both in general and in academic work. The module will help students to submit assignments in Welsh in their main subjects, and prepare them for a Welsh or bilingual workplace. It will also be useful for those wishing to achieve the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Welsh Language Skills Certificate.
Years 2 & 3 (the module can only be chosen once)
CCB-2203/CCB-33003 Cymraeg Gwaith 20 credits, Semester 2
This module is for students who want to develop their Welsh language skills for confident and effective use in the context of the Welsh or bilingual workplace. The module is designed for the contemporary workplace where staff may also be required to work remotely. It will also help those wishing to achieve the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Welsh Language Skills Certificate.
The module will have two main goals. Firstly, to enable students to consider both purpose and audience when speaking and writing in various professional contexts. Secondly, to enable students to gain confidence in the accuracy of their language skills through knowledge of Welsh grammar.
A period of work experience in a workplace that operates through the medium of Welsh is also a key component of the module.
Postgraduate students
CCB-4402 (15 credits); CCB-4403 (20 credits) Ymdrin â’ch Pwnc Drwy’r Gymraeg 15 or 20 credits, Semester 1 & 2
The module is aimed at postgraduate students who want to develop their language skills to confidently discuss their academic work through the medium of Welsh, both orally and in writing. It is suitable for first language speakers and fluent learners.
The module is particularly useful for those wishing to write their thesis in Welsh or wanting to deliver seminars or presentations in Welsh. It will also prepare you to work confidently in Welsh in your field of study and to to achieve the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Welsh Language Skills Certificate.
Amongst the areas covered by the module are general vocabulary and standardized terms within each student’s subject area, the use of formal and informal Welsh in an academic context, and applied language skills such as translanguaging and translating. There is also be an emphasis on identifying personal language weaknesses, and working with a tutor and independently to strengthen your language skills.
The module is available in 15-credit and 20-credit format. Students opting to take the 20-credit module will create a portfolio of subject-related work in addition to the other assessments. It will span two semesters, from November to March.
Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol
Bangor University offers many opportunities for students who wish to study through the medium of Welsh. In collaboration with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, Bangor provides more modules and courses through the medium of Welsh than any other university. Bangor also has the highest number of students studying through the medium of Welsh.
Bilingual or Welsh-medium modules are available in every school, and a module booklet is published annually for students in the first year which lists all available modules.
