About This Course
This MOOC is an online, 8-week CPD course suitable for all those who work in health or social care, and are interested in protecting people from avoidable infection. The MOOC has been designed to provide guided learning on infection prevention and control, with signposting to a range of materials and resources. This means that learners can select information relevant to their role and work setting as they learn via the MOOC. Each week a new learning unit is released, and each unit will take approximately 1 hour of time to study. Learners can choose to study at a time and place which suit them due to the nature of the MOOC. There is no requirement to be available for study at any particular time for the MOOC. Our learners have included people from across the UK, and more widely from across the globe.
What is the length of the course?
This MOOC is an online, 8-week self directed CPD course. Each week, you will access a different learning unit focused on promoting best practice and behaviours in infection prevention. Each unit requires approximately one hour of your time per week. You can study at a time and place that suits you.
Why Study this course?
This MOOC will provide an insight into the impact of infection and the importance of preventing infection whenever possible. Learners will develop an understanding of key issues relating to the prevention of infection, and how they can take action in the place they work to reduce the risk of infection to the people they care for. Learners will also be signposted to the very wide range of information, tools and resources available globally to help reduce avoidable infections, as well as understanding the policy context in the country they work in.
Successful completion of the course provides you with a digital Certificate of Completion evidencing 8 hours CPD.

Tutor
Tracey Cooper
Tracey is a Lecturer in Health Sciences (Infection Prevention & Control) at Bangor University. Until June 2022, she worked as Director of Infection Prevention and Control, at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and was an Honorary Lecturer at Bangor University. Prior to this, she worked as Assistant Director of Nursing (Infection Prevention) for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board in Wales and was Director of Infection Prevention and Control in London for four years before that, having first ‘got the bug’ for infection prevention and control in 1996. She has also previously worked in infection prevention in Devon, on the Isle of Wight, and in Southampton as a consultant nurse, covering both acute and community issues. Her background includes work in intensive and coronary care, as well as acute hospital ward practice. Tracey has experience as both an author and peer reviewer and was the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) Editor from 2004-2008. She subsequently served as IPS Vice-President and then President until 2012. She continues to participate in national and professional society initiatives and projects and is particularly interested in professional development, change management, and patient safety initiatives.

The learning unit topics are:
1. Principles of infection prevention (Global and local significance of infection, HCAI and antimicrobial resistance. Impact of infection on people/patients/society)
2. Getting evidence into practice (Evidence-based practice, sources of evidence, quality of care people expect to receive)
3. Knowing if you are making a difference (Standards and guidelines, audit, surveillance and feedback.)
4. Behaviour change (Behaviour change, how we learn behaviours, theories and related examples to infection prevention)
5. Behaviour change in practice (Behaviour change in practice. Influences on behaviour)
6. Understanding the work setting (Person-centred care, workplace culture and managing challenges)
7. Leading the way (Leadership approaches and principles with relevance to infection prevention)
8. Championing, quality improvement and final reflections (What is a champion and championing in infection prevention, quality improvement in IP, bringing it all together with final reflections
Course Cost
The cost of this course is £25 .
Successful completion of the course provides you with a digital Certificate of Completion evidencing 8 hours CPD.
Entry Requirements
This course will be delivered through the medium of English. If you are not fluent in English: we do not require formal proof of your proficiency of English. However, as our Short Courses are University level courses, we strongly recommend that you should have a level at least equivalent to IELTS 6.5 to fully benefit.
