MSc Language Technologies
Year 1 Modules
The student must take a minimum of 180
credits from the modules in Year 1. Students who have a
BA or BSc in Linguistics or a closely related subject may be
eligible to be exempt from taking QXL-4432 and should take
QXL-4933: Advanced Linguistics Research Methods instead.
The choice of which research module is appropriate should be
discussed with their personal tutor. If a student with
comp. sci. background only has a 3rd, they will be required
to take ICE-4101 Intro. to Programming module. If they have
2:2 or above, they should, upon agreement with Comp Sci
lead, take QXL – 4482 20 credit Msc Generalist Mini-Project.
If a student has a linguistics background, they can, upon
agreement with Ling lead, take an alternative 44XX level
linguistics module(s) in place of 4411 Foundation of
Linguistics LXM-4038 Translation in Practice can be
waved, upon agreement of Ling program lead, if the applicant
has a successfully completed a post graduate degree in
translation and /or interpreting studies. If a student
wishes to do a dissertation that is computer sci and
programming focused, upon agreement with both Ling and Comp
Sci leads, they can register for ICE-4001 Comp Sci
dissertation in place of QXL-4400 MSC Dissertation.
