Overview
This module is aimed at complete beginners with no previous knowledge of Welsh. The emphasis will be on learning to speak the language and learning basic patterns and constructions. The method used in class will be a communicative method, and importance is placed on learning basic vocabulary and constructions for everyday use.
All the work in class will be oral work and listening work.
You will be expected to complete 3 written assignments (e.g. translating sentences, answering questions, fill in the blanks, writing a simple dialogue) and sit an oral examination.
Outline syllabus
The following patterns will be studied:
Greetings and expressing needs / wants e.g. in a café Basic pronunciation Present tense, 1st person - where you live /study, where you come from, what you are studying, going on holiday present tense - learning the formal and informal 'you' (2nd person) The past tense - 1st and 2nd persons, including an introduction to the soft mutation The imperfect tense - describing in the past - it was Possession - I have (something)

Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to answer simple questions orally using the following patterns:
the present tense
possession (in the present tense)
the simple past tense
the imperfect tense (to describe past events)
- Students will be able to ask simple questions orally using the following patterns:
the present tense
possession (in the present tense)
the simple past tense
the imperfect tense (to describe past events)
- Students will be able to use the appropriete yes answer orally (within the range of patterns covered on the course)
- Students will be able to write simple greetings, use the present tense (1st and 2nd person singular) using the verbs byw, astudio, dŵad o, licio, gwneud and also to be able to ask and answer questions using the question words sut / lle / pryd / efo pwy / be.
- Students will be able to write using the imperfect tense (roedd) to describe past events and use the possessive form (mae gen i / sgen i ddim).
- Students will be able to write using the present tense (1st and 2nd person plural), answer using the appropriate yes/no and the simple past tense including the use of the soft mutation.
- tudents will be able to understand and answer questions (reading comprehension) using all the patterns covered on the course
