The Module addresses these key areas of study within each area several learning outcomes will be examined:
Maintaining Professional Standards
Compare professional standards requirements within the police service to similar professional organisations
Analyse how the police have developed policies and procedures to reduce the possibility of professional malpractice and increase community confidence
Analyse the role that independent bodies such as the IPCC or HMIC play in holding the police accountable to the public
Examine why people in positions of respect or authority may fail to comply with policies, procedures, protocols or legislation, and commit criminal offences
Review how previous instances of misconduct/malpractice can influence future professional policing
Review the progress being made within the police service to improve professional standards
Decision-making and Discretion
Evaluate decisions made whilst on operational duty and the impact upon the outcome of the use (or otherwise) of the National Decision Model
Understand the importance of accountability in assessing risk
Evaluate the impact of risk aversion and risk avoidance on the ability of the police to deliver an effective service
Understand how varying circumstances can exert influence upon the decision-making process
Critically review policing incidents in which ethical considerations have been crucial to the decision-making process
Communication Skills
Evaluate and apply a range of theories and practices associated with communication
Develop non-verbal communication skills for use in professional contexts
Deliver appropriate and effective presentations to an audience
Understand the process for conducting an operational briefing

Understand the potential impact of organisational justice on a police constable
Evolve strategies for dealing with organisational culture in policing
