Assessment Strategy
-threshold -Pass: The student’s work will demonstrate: some original interpretation; some evidence of extensive and thorough study; reasonably good reconstruction and critical analysis of material; the use of recent research perspectives; and reasonably good depth and breadth of understanding. The communication style will be acceptable with likely some fairly minor typographical or other errors. There will be good referencing of primary source material where appropriate.
-good -Merit: The student’s work will demonstrate: a good degree of original interpretation; good re-construction and critical analysis of material; the use of recent research perspectives; and good depth and breadth of understanding. The communication style will be precise and concise with minor typographical or other errors. There will be very good referencing of primary source material where appropriate.
-excellent -Distinction: The student’s work will be of a standard approaching that which would be acceptable for submission for publication in a peer-reviewedjournal. This will involve some original interpretation, critical analysis of material, the use of recent research perspectives, and will demonstrate very gooddepth and breadth of understanding. The communication style will be precise and concise with reasonably few typographical or other errors. There will becomprehensive referencing of primary source material where appropriate.
Learning Outcomes
- On successful completion of this module students will be able to accurately formulate research hypotheses and develop appropriate research methods in order to address a chosen research question
- On successful completion of this module students will be able to competently demonstrate the ability to manage a substantial research project, including the ability to manage the ethics process.
- On successful completion of this module students will be able to complete a written piece of work that contains the completed research project and comprehensively communicates their understanding of it in a way that is appropriate to the advanced level required for postgraduate study.
- On successful completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate a systematic, critical and analytical approach to the collection, organisation, and interpretation of scientific data
- On successful completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate written and verbal communication skills that are appropriate to the advanced level required for postgraduate level study.
- On successful completion of this module students will be able to develop a written proposal that is based on clear scientific critique and rationale
- On successful completion of this module students will reflect on their own development as a researcher in a critical and systematic way
