Overview
This module builds on the theoretical and clinical skills developed in year 1. Students will develop skills and an understanding of the importance of the role of the dental hygienist and other members of the dental team in the patient management process including dental implant maintenance and tooth whitening. We will introduce the principles and biomechanics of orthodontic tooth movement and the role of the hygienist in orthodontic treatment and will develop the skills to enable the temporary re-cementation of crowns and restorations. We will look at periodontal disease in greater depth, including specific microbiota, systemic disease and nutrition, occlusion, necrotising disease and mucogingival deformities and the role of antibiotics and surgery in periodontal disease management.

Learning Outcomes
- Critically evaluate and apply evidence-based knowledge necessary for the provision of advanced periodontal treatment including the maintenance of dental implants and the safe provision of tooth whitening.
- Define the principles of orthodontics and the biomechanics of orthodontic tooth movement and force control and critically appraise the dental hygienists’ role in the management of patients undergoing orthodontic therapy.
- Demonstrate appropriate patient assessment, care and management with critical evaluation of materials used, treatment modalities and pain management techniques.
- Differentiate between periodontal diseases and other diseases affecting the periodontium.
