Overview

Building on previous modules this module will bring together all aspects of patient management and care and the associated regulations and legislation that a dental hygienist must work to work in the best interests of patients and within their professional obligations. Students will develop an understanding of social and psychological issues relevant to patient’s behaviour and anxiety and describe behavioural approaches, which could be applied in practice, to improve oral health in certain vulnerable groups. Students will develop an understanding of child development and behaviour management techniques for paediatric patients and anxious adults.

Students will develop a range of skills for self-development, teamworking and leadership in order to provide better patient-centred care.

Learning Content will include: • Assessing patients’ levels of anxiety, experience and expectations in respect to dental care • Child development and behaviour management • Behaviour management and pain management including sedation, general anaesthesia and complementary therapies • Managing the ageing patient • Managing the special care patient • ILS • Safeguarding
• Legal and Ethical Considerations of patient management • Understanding the professional role of the dental hygienist and the dental team in patient care • Development of self and others – feedback, peer review, personal development planning • Leadership

Learning Outcomes

• Accurately assess and reflect on their own capabilities and limitations in the interest of high-quality patient care and seek advice from supervisors or colleagues where appropriate and use this information to enhance their personal development plans.

• Demonstrate effective leadership and patient management in the medical emergency situation

• Demonstrate knowledge and a critical understanding of child development and the impact on behaviour including appropriate behavioural approaches to patient management

• Demonstrate knowledge of effective pain management including inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia and complementary therapies

• Demonstrate knowledge of the management of appropriate treatment for the special care dental patient, including the older population, appreciating statutory legal and ethical responsibilities

• Utilise the provision and receipt of effective feedback for personal professional development
