Overview
Nurses role in the care and management including monitoring of blood glucose, diagnostic investigations, nutritional requirements and health education of patients with diabetes. Evidence based practice and local policies and procedures associated with diabetic patients. Psychosocial impacts of diagnosis and coping. Multi-disciplinary team working including family and carers providing support in both primary and secondary care settings.
Assessment Strategy
-threshold -Basic understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Basic understanding of issues relating to diabetes. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of D- grade in the assignment to in order to pass the theory component of the module.
-good -Very Good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Good understanding of issues relating to diabetes disease. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade B-in the Grading Criteria.
-excellent -Very good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and evidence of additional evidence gained by the student. Very good understanding of issues relating to diabetes. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade A- in the Grading Criteria

Learning Outcomes
- Analyse and review the main types of diabetes; their treatment and management, making reference to national & international guidelines.
- Critically appraise the evidence to support the strategies available to promote behavioral change, health promotion and self-care.
- Critically examine and evaluate the role of the multidisciplinary team when managing diabetic patients.
- Demonstrate an ability to synthesize and evaluate the evidence base to make sound judgements regarding treatment and patient management options.

Description
15 min recorded presentation (will be uploaded onto blackboard) relating to an aspect of diabetic care/management e.g. a pharmacological treatment, diet or utilising motivational interviewing etc. The student will need to demonstrate an in depth knowledge of this subject and utilise current literature to support the discussion/presentation. This assessment will equate to ~ 40% of the total mark awarded.

Description
The student will be expected to submit a 3,500-word case study, which provides evidence of learning against the learning outcomes. The assignment will include an anonymised case profile (400 words maximum) which will address the key features of the patient’s background, relevant family history and the nature of their illness. From the case profile, the student will select a particular problem for further discussion and critical analysis, with a relevant literature review. This assessment will equate to ~ 60% of the total mark awarded.
