Overview
This module is suitable for all those who work within health and social care. It will help students to explore key infection prevention and control topics relevant to their area of work and practice. It builds upon the learning in the Infection Prevention Micro-credit Module 1, and has a core focus upon:
- Infection risks presented by invasive devices and extremes of age
- Best practices in relation to the management of invasive devices
- Mitigating the risks of infection which arise from extremes of age
This 5-week module will encourage reflection and critical thinking relating to own practice and work area, and knowledge gained will support students to reduce infection risks to their own patient/client group.
Course content may include the following:
Introduction to online module –“how to” guide. Overview. Principles of Infection Prevention. Burden and impact of infection. Getting evidence into practice. Audit, surveillance and feedback, quality improvement.
Assessment Strategy
Students at level 7 will have their work assessed based on the following criteria:
50% - 59% Pass - Students demonstrate a satisfactory level of knowledge, understanding and strategies to introduce sustainable practices in their setting.
60% - 69% Merit - Students demonstrate a good level of knowledge, understanding and strategies to introduce sustainable practices in their setting.
70% + Distinction - Students demonstrate an excellent level of knowledge, understanding and strategies to introduce sustainable practices in their setting
Learning Outcomes
- Critically analyse infection risks arising from the use of invasive devices and extremes of age.
- Critically appraise the evidence-base around clinical practices which reduce the risk of infection arising from use of invasive devices and extremes of age.

Description
Students will submit an assessed reflective journal of 1000 words to demonstrate achievement of the module learning objectives. They will be guided to address the learning outcomes in the module via the module online information, and via weekly announcements via the Blackboard system. The instructions within the module units themselves will guide the students to suitable topics for their reflective blog/journal.

Students will submit a short reflective journal/blog of 300 words during weeks 5 as they develop their critical thinking and analysis. They will receive feedback on these blogs. They will be guided to address the learning outcomes in the module via the module handbook, and via weekly announcements via the Blackboard system. The instructions within the module units themselves will guide the students to suitable topics for their reflective blog/journal
