School Of Educational Sciences
Module - Semester 3
15 credits
Module Organiser:
Denise Foran Conn
Overview
The course will introduce strategies for effective supervision, with a focus on using behaviour analytic supervision. Students will discuss data-based decision making with regards to intervention and supervision effectiveness. The content is drawn from the BCBA Task List (5th Edition). Section 2: Applications, Content Areas: H: Selecting and Implementing Interventions and I: Personnel Supervision and Management.
Indicative course content list: Week 1: Performance monitoring when supervising trainees. Week 2: Behavioural Skills Training Week 3: Behavioural Approaches to Supervision Week 4: Behavioural Approaches to Supervision II
Assessment Strategy
Students will complete quizzes at the end of each unit in order to progress to the next unit. Students will be expected to complete two assignments.
Students will be awarded a grade only (feedback will only be provided if the grade is a fail) for each assignment and need to achieve above 50% in every component to pass the overall module. You must pass both modules to pass the bridging module
Excellent 70% + • Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of applied behaviour analysis. • Depth of insight into the applications of behavioural principles in the real world. • Excellent understanding and original interpretation of theoretical issues with no factual errors • Clear evidence of critical analysis and insightful evaluation of theory and research. • Logically presented and defended arguments presented with coherent synthesis and original interpretation. •Answer focused on question, with no irrelevant material and clear structure. • Well-structured presentation showing focus and clarity of argument and expression.
Good 60 - 69% • Strong knowledge of key concepts in applied behaviour analysis. • Some insight into the applications of behavioural principles in the real world. • Solid understanding of theoretical issues mostly free of factual errors. • Evidence of critical analysis and evaluation of theory and research. • Coherent arguments presented, with some limited synthesis and original interpretation • Answer focussed on question, but with very little irrelevant material and clear structure • Well-structured presentation showing focus of argument and expression.
Threshold 50 – 59% • Adequate knowledge of some of the key concepts in applied behaviour analysis only. • Some basic consideration of the applications of behaviourism in the real world. • Weaknesses in understanding theoretical issues with multiple/major factual errors. • Limited evidence of critical analysis and evaluation of theory and research. • Arguments are presented briefly, but they are weak with no synthesis or original interpretation. • Answer only briefly focussed on question and with some irrelevant material and poor structure. • Weak presentation with disjointed structure and major APA format errors.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to state the reasons for using behaviour-analytic supervision and the potential risks of ineffective supervision.
- Students will be able to use performance monitoring, feedback, and reinforcement systems
- Students will describe the steps of behavioural skills training and methods to evaluate it effectiveness.

Description
Supervision Essay 1 (1500 words) The essay will encourage assimilation of ideas and detailed knowledge of the principles of behaviour and their application in behaviour-analytic practices specific to supervision and assessment. Students will be asked to conduct a literature review which must include at least four peer reviewed journal articles, three of which were published in the last 10 years. The literature review must be presented in APA format.
