This module will provide students with an overview of how new technologies have changed and influenced the development of film industries in global and local contexts, and how emerging digital technologies have revolutionized increasingly converged and multinational film industries. The first phase of the module will take a more historical approach, looking at a variety of international and local contexts, focussing on specific moments in which emerging technologies helped pushed the boundaries of the possibilities for film and shaped a nation’s film industry. The second half will take a more contemporary approach, examining the status of increasingly converged and international film industries, with a particular focus on how the emergence of digital technologies have shaped modern film industries, including the production, distribution, exhibition and marketing of film, with the potential futures for cinema also explored.
