About This Course
This is an exciting course that gives you expansive legal knowledge, skills and experience while developing your understanding of the human mind and behaviours. Study criminal law in conjunction with forensic psychology or company law together with consumer psychology, ensuring you are well-equipped for your chosen career. The course is designed to foster your intellectual independence. You’ll be supported to develop the confidence and skills needed to think critically, to ask and answer cogent questions about law and its role in society, and to effectively communicate your reasoned arguments, orally or in writing.
You will acquire new knowledge and understanding of the principles and values of law and justice, and you’ll learn how law can be used to benefit individuals and societies, including the most marginalised in our community.
During the course you will study the fundamental areas of legal knowledge. For example, Public Law where you’ll learn about how the country is organised and run; Criminal Law which includes examining punishment and the rehabilitation of individuals who break the law, and Contract Law where you’ll learn about how legal agreements are made and operate between people and companies. In addition to this you will have the opportunity to study topics such as Language and its Disorders, Brain and Mind and Learning to be Happy.
You’ll also have the opportunity to choose from exciting law optional modules such as International Law, Commercial Law, Human Rights, Roman Law & Legal History, Philosophy of Law and Family Law. If you choose our Work Placement module you will get the opportunity to experience legal work in a real-life situation.
You will be an active participant in your learning. It’s not all about sitting and reading. You'll learn the skills of debating, advocating and negotiating through a range of module and extra-curricular opportunities. You’ll also benefit from professional development activities, trips to government and judicial institutions, and from a wide range of guest speakers.
Throughout your studies you’ll acquire the academic knowledge and be introduced to the skills required to pursue a legal career should you wish to go on to qualify as a solicitor or barrister.

Additional Course Options
This course is available with a Placement Year option where you will study for 1 additional year. The Placement Year is undertaken at the end of the second year and students are away for the whole of the academic year.
The Placement Year provides you with a fantastic opportunity to broaden your horizons and develop valuable skills and contacts through working with a self-sourced organisation relevant to your degree subject. The minimum period in placement (at one or more locations) is seven calendar months; more usually you would spend 10-12 months with a placement provider. You would normally start sometime in the period June to September of your second year and finish between June and September the following year. Placements can be UK-based or overseas and you will work with staff to plan and finalise the placement arrangements.
You will be expected to find and arrange a suitable placement to complement your degree and will be fully supported throughout by a dedicated member of staff at your academic School and the University’s Careers and Employability Services.
You will have the opportunity to fully consider this option when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto this pathway at the appropriate time. Course Content
You will experience a range of teaching methods throughout your course, including lectures, small group formats (tutorials), online learning environments, self-directed or collaborative study, experiential learning and problem-based learning.
Your usual week will be made up of twelve hours of lectures along with fortnightly one-hour tutorials.
During your time with us, you will foster self-management skills, including an ability to reflect on your own learning, make effective use of feedback and an ability to work in a team.
You will develop the ability to conduct independent research, including accurate identification of issues which require researching, retrieval and critical evaluation of relevant information from a range of appropriate sources, including primary legal sources.
The level of challenge and achievement you will be faced with is gradually increased throughout your course.
Our learning, teaching and assessment procedures will give you the opportunity to demonstrate that you have met the necessary skills and qualities within your law course. We recognise the importance of inclusive practice and are sensitive to equal opportunities requirements as indicated by good practice and relevant legislative obligations.
A wide range of assessment methods are used to determine your overall achievement; these assessments may be timed or untimed, seen or unseen, continuous or examination based. Tasks that you might encounter could include essays and reports of varying length; case notes; statutory interpretation; briefs; critiques of articles; oral/video presentations; moots; skills-based assessments; reflective learning journals; research project/dissertation; and work/clinic-based assessments.
What will you study on this course?
In Year 1, students will take 80 credits from the following Law topics, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Legal Skills and Public Law. Students will take 40 credits from Psychology topics such as Brain and Mind, Criminal Psychology, Social Influence, Stress & Distress in Health & Mental Health and Scientific Writing and Communication.
In Year 2, students will take 80 credits from the following Law topics, Equity and Trusts, Land Law, Law, Justice and Procedure and Tort Law. Students will take 40 credits from Psychology topics such as Behavioural Psychology, Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality, and Individual Differences and Social Psychology.
In Year 3, students will take a total of 120 credits. Students will study topics such as Practical Professional Skills, Business Law & Practice, Property Practice and Wills & Estates. Students will take 40 credits in optional Law modules such as Business Law & Practice, Commercial Law, Criminal Evidence, Dissertation, Endangered Wildlife and International Law, Environmental Law, Family and Welfare Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Law and Contemporary Issues, International Law of the Sea, Law and Social Justice, Law and Technology, Law, Justice and Rights, Media Law, Preserving Cultural Heritage, Property Practice and Work Placement . Students will also take 40 credits in Psychology from topics such as Applied Behaviour Analysis, Born to Run: Achieve your goals, Brain Development and Degeneration, Cognitive Neuroscience, Consumer Psychology: Theory, Control of Mental Processes, Counselling Skills, Disorders of Literacy: Diagnosis and Intervention, Forensic Psychology, Mindfulness, Psychoacoustics and Auditory Neuroscience, Psychophysiology of Eating, Stress, Anxiety, and Health, The Body in the Mind, The Social Brain, Children, Families, and Society and Topics in Illness and Disability.

Facilities
Law facilities
- We have our own Law library, situated in the beautiful Lloyd Reading Room in the Main Arts library, which has received substantial investment from the University and other benefactors.
- The Law Library provides printed and electronic sources to meet the needs of its users and is constantly developed to reflect the latest teaching and research activities within the field of Law. These resources include reference, statutes, law reports, journals, textbooks, pamphlets, governmental reports, newspapers and online legal databases.
- For those wishing to undertake more in-depth research at Masters or PhD level, the University Archives contain a wealth of historical material and a rich vein of primary sources.
- A purpose-built moot court room which enables students to gain practical experience. The Moot Court Room allows ours students to practice presenting cases in a real life setting, take part in trials, act as representatives for the parties and learn how to conduct themselves in a court of law.
Psychology facilities
Throughout your degree, you’ll have the opportunity to access these facilities as participants in research projects, and you’ll be involved in some of these facilities as researchers during your project in the third year.
Psychology has its own research dedicated MRI/fMRI Philips Elition 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. Our new research-dedicated scanner was installed in summer 2019 in the main psychology building. This scanner offers cutting-edge MR imaging technique and includes MRI-compatible eye-tracking and capacity for in-scanner EEG recordings, and a nearby mock scanner to support training studies and work with children. The scanner is also equipped for 4D cardiac, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). As an example of how you may experience the scanner, apart from as a research participant, is that 3rd-year undergraduate students doing their project within Dr Koldewyn’s lab have been involved in studies involving the brain response to observed social interactions, including data collection and analysis of developmental data from primary-aged children.
Expertise in electrophysiological methods (EEG/ERP) is a particular strength in the School. The Psychology Open-access Electroencephalography and Topography (POET) lab consists of a fully shielded sound-attenuated testing booth, 128 channel BioSemi EEG system, and all equipment necessary for auditory and visual EEG/ERP experiments, with synchronized remote eye-tracking. Apart from opportunities to be involved as a research participant, undergraduate students in the 3rd year have had the opportunity to be actively involved in EEG/ERP lab for their 3rd year project.
Currently, the POET lab is used to investigate a diverse range of topics such as:
- machine learning to predict motor sequences from EEG activity
- social development and self-perception in infants
- development of single EEG trial analyses to compare language processing in typical and developmentally challenged groups.
The Brain Stimulation Lab is equipped with two different types of stimulation equipment, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique that uses strong magnetic fields to briefly interrupt the processing of nerve cells in a small area of the underlying surface of the brain. An electrical current is passed very briefly through the stimulator device - a coil of copper wires (encased in plastic) held on the surface of the scalp. This current induces a magnetic field around the coil that, in turn, induces an electrical current in the underlying nerve cells on the surface of the brain. While the nerve cells are being stimulated, and for a few 10ths of a second afterward, they cannot perform their normal functions. This does not cause damage or injury to the nerve cells.
The second type of stimulation is called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and like the TMS, it is non-invasive and painless, and uses low-intensity electrical currents to excite or inhibit neuronal activity in specific parts of the brain. Both of these systems have been interfaced in experiments with equipment for eye-tracking, electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), and for kinematic recording.
Psychology houses a number of motion capture labs for capturing of complex full body and limb motion for research with equipment including a Polhemus motion capture system (16-channels) that enables us to study skilled actions with high spatio-temporal precision.
Some recent examples of activity within these labs include Prof. Robert Ward investigating how body motion information is perceived by observers, and to what extent this information is reliable or deceptive. Dr. Koldewyn has used the systems to record search patterns during a physical search task designed to explore how quickly children learn where a target object is likely to be, and how that learning is influenced by observing others. 3rd-year project students were involved in designing the study and in collecting data from primary-aged children.
In addition to open-access shared facilities, the school has highly specialised facilities dedicated to specific academics such as:
- several dedicated EEG labs in addition to our open-access facility
- two sound-proofed labs for auditory studies
- virtual-reality (VR) and augmented-reality (AR) robotically controlled force-feedback systems
- mobile eye and pen tracking for studies of literacy development in schools and the lab
- a food and psychopharmacology lab including hardware and software for specialised food dispensing machine
- video analysis suite for children’s cardio-respiratory fitness and fundamental movement skills
- MRI-compatible force transducer keyboard (10-channels) to record bimanual finger presses continuously including preparatory and mirror movements
- Transcranial Doppler Sonography lab to allow for measurement of blood flow into each half of the brain.
The School shares University and College-wide licensing for Qualtrics and Pavlovia platforms to facilitate online research.
Several participant panels are available to help researchers in the School of Psychology recruit participants. As a psychology student you’ll be involved in the student panel (SONA) and in total our students participate in about 4000 hours of research overall each year.
We also maintain specialised participant panels which may form part of your third-year project:
- Neurological patient panel, in collaboration with the NHS.
- Learning disorders panel: focused on Dyslexia (in cooperation with our Miles Dyslexia Centre) and including other learning disorders in adult participants
- Community Participant Panel: These are helpful for identifying Bilinguals, People with Dyslexia, and the Elderly, and particularly for recruiting matched controls for patient case studies, and for providing a pool of bilingual Welsh/English participants.
- Infant/ Child Development Database
Psychology researchers studying child development benefit from a close relationship with Bangor’s Tír na nÓg Nursery. The nursery provides a unique resource for researchers in the Clinical, Health, and Behavioural Psychology and Language, Bilingualism, and Cognitive Development Research groups. Tír na nÓg is equipped with special facilities, such as an observation lounge and video cameras. Subject to the consent of the children’s parents or guardians, observations can be made to further understanding of language, learning, and development.

Library and Archive Services
Our four libraries provide a range of attractive study environments including collaborative work areas, meeting rooms and silent study spaces.
We have an extensive collection of books and journals and many of the journals are available online in full-text format.
We house one of the largest university-based archives not only in Wales, but also the UK. Allied to the Archives is the Special Collections of rare printed books.
Learning Resources
There is a range of learning resources available, supported by experienced staff, to help you in your studies.
The University’s IT Services provides computing, media and reprographics facilities and services including:
- Over 1,150 computers for students, with some PC rooms open 24 hours a day

- The cost of a full-time undergraduate course is £9,250 per year (2025/26).
- The fee for all integrated study abroad years is £1,385 (2025/26).

Additional Costs
There are also some common additional costs that are likely to arise for students on all courses, for example:
- If you choose to study abroad or take the International Experience Year as part of your course.
- If you attend your Graduation Ceremony, there will be a cost for gown hire (£25-£75) and cost for additional guest tickets (c.£12 each).
Course-specific additional costs
Depending on the course you are studying, there may be additional course-specific costs that you will be required to meet. These fall into three categories:
- Mandatory Costs: these are related to a particular core or compulsory module that you’ll be required to complete to achieve your qualification e.g. compulsory field trips, uniforms for students on placement, DBS Check.
- Necessarily Incurred Costs: these may not be experienced by all students, and will vary depending on the course e.g. professional body membership, travel to placements, specialist software, personal safety equipment.
- Optional Costs: these depend on your choice of modules or activity and they are shown to give you an indication of the optional costs that may arise to make sure your choice is as informed as possible. These can include graduation events for your course, optional field trips, Welcome Week trips.

Throughout your studies you’ll acquire the academic knowledge and be introduced to the skills needed to pursue a legal career should you wish to go on to qualify as a solicitor or barrister. You may wish to work in the public sector as a government lawyer, or in the private sector, specialising in commercial law, immigration law or criminal law.
If you don’t want to practise as a solicitor or barrister, you may still wish to work in an area where your legal training and knowledge would be advantageous and where you can work to make a positive difference. Many non-governmental organisations (charities) require people with legal backgrounds to work as policy officers, campaigners and advice workers. International organisations, such as the United Nations offer tremendous opportunities to those who are looking for an international career.
As an LLB Law graduate, you will be able to pursue career opportunities in a wide range of other areas not necessarily connected to the law but for which the general and intellectual skills acquired during a law degree make you extremely well qualified. These may include the civil service, journalism, the media and creative industries, the probation service, the police and the prison service.
