Overview
By making full use of the Optical Communications Research Group’s long-established expertise in Digital Signal Processing (DSP), the WEFO funded research oriented DSP Centre of Excellence was established in September 2019 to develop cutting-edge DSP solutions for 5G and beyond and their ecosystems in order to address strategic industrial challenges.
Achievements
- Established two new research labs and one new innovation lab
- Secured state of the art equipment worth over £3.5m, increasing soon to over £5.5m
- Developed a strong partner base of 35 partners across the whole telecommunications supply chain
- Captured over £8m additional RD&I funding
- Published over 60 research publications in the open domain
- Made four staff roles permanent and extended nine fixed-term contracts
- Integrated 11 Cross Cutting Themes into activities
- Developed world-first real-time testbeds
- Demonstrated three world-record experimental demonstrations of signal transmissions
- Created four portable prototypes of newly-developed techniques
- Designed field trials of new techniques as part of broadband project to White Area properties on the Isle of Anglesey
- Fostered strong University support to create a research-to-commercialisation framework
