Creative Writing at Bangor: Book Launch Celebration
Two recent graduates from Bangor University's MA in Creative Writing, Gwenno Gwilym and Katrina Moinet, celebrate the launch of new publications at 6pm on Tuesday December 10th in Main Arts Foyer.
Gwenno Gwilym's bilingual novel V+ Fo (Gwasg y Bwthyn) is an unfiltered portrayal of contemporary love and home life in bilingual Wales. As the review in Nation Cymru puts it: "Every so often a novel comes along that’s a breath of fresh air". Dr Alys Conran adds: "Increasingly, bilingual writers on our courses don’t cast one language aside in order to write in their other language(s), and know that one language can bring energy to the other and illuminate it. Bilingual creativity is a valid and productive creative choice, and is the reality for many of our students and staff. It’s wonderful to see a fascinating new writer like Gwenno Gwilym really bring all her creative brilliance to bear in this portrayal of contemporary life and love through both languages. Readers will absolutely love this book."
Katrina Moinet's poetry collection Portrait of a Young Girl Falling (Hedgehog Press) explores desire and consent through a range of innovative forms and visceral images. Professor Zoë Skoulding comments: "The tremendous inventiveness and energy of these poems is part of the work of making space for new ways of thinking and being. This is work to which Katrina is dedicated, not only through writing, but in generously creating opportunities for other poets in the area." Katrina has shaped a community of local writers through hosting Versify, a monthly open-mic night at Bangor's Blue Sky Café. Since she completed the MA her writing has been placed in several competitions and published nationally and internationally. A new prize-winning pamphlet will be published by Hedgehog Press in 2025.
The launch event will be introduced by Dr Alys Conran and Professor Zoë Skoulding, who both teach on the MA in Creative Writing (English), and will feature short readings and discussion with Gwenno and Katrina.
Everyone is welcome.
