The ‘Engage’ seminars are a series of lectures on a range of computing, engineering and design topics, organised by the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Bangor University.
In this talk, Professor Chris Headleand will explore the evolving landscape of the metaverse, with a particular focus on the Staffsverse project. The Staffsverse represents a novel step in virtual campus design, offering a dynamic and immersive space for learning, collaboration, and social interaction. By leveraging Fortnite as a platform and campus engine, and with research-informed gamification strategies, this project reimagines traditional academic environments and student onboarding. It provides new students with a sense of presence, allowing for targeted pre-enrolment support.
Through the lens of the Staffsverse, Chris will discuss the broader implications of virtual spaces for education, industry, and community building. He will highlight key challenges and opportunities, from technological integration to fostering inclusivity and engagement in virtual environments. Attendees will gain insights into the practical applications of VR within academic and professional contexts, as well as the visionary potential of the metaverse to reshape how we work, learn, and connect.
Professor Chris Headleand is an academic and innovator in the fields of game design, education, and virtual worlds, with a PhD from Bangor University in Artificial Intelligence. As the Head of the University of Staffordshire Games Institute, and Professor of Digital Innovation, he leads cutting-edge research and industry collaborations aimed at advancing the creative and technical aspects of gaming and immersive technologies. Chris has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academia and industry through initiatives like the 1UP Fellowship, a scheme where 30 students are employed each year to run an inhouse Games Studio: Bulldog Studios. This scheme won the coveted Best Education Initiative in the UK award at TIGA, and a game produced through the studio won Best Arcade Game of 2023 a year later.
With a career spanning numerous projects at the intersection of technology and creativity, Chris is a passionate advocate for leveraging virtual reality to foster community and engagement. His work on the metaverse campuses, and pastoral care through multiplayer games exemplifies his commitment to exploring the transformative potential of immersive spaces in education, collaboration, and social interaction.
