The Resituated Rural in Spanish Media and Culture
Research Seminar
In this conversation between two leading specialists in contemporary Spain, you will hear about some of the most urgent questions affecting the country's rural milieu and how it is being represented in culture and the media.
In recent years, rural landscapes and lives have become the focus of a steady trend in Spanish cultural production. Expressions of the rural have spread in literature, journalism, cinema and social networks; some authors begin to speak of a ‘rural turn’ in culture. To study this phenomenon, culture and media scholar Enric Castelló (Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona) has led the research project Ruralim, where Bangor University’s Helena Miguélez-Carballeira is collaborating.
In this conversation, introduced by film and media scholar and ACL Head of School Prof. Ruth Mc Elroy, they will discuss some of the frictions identified in the Spanish debate about the rural and its profound implications for media and political discourse, communities’ memories, emotions and identities associated with environmental, communal and rural loss.
Organiser: Helena Miguélez-Carballeira.
