The article explores the Universal Basic Income (UBI) pilot with young care leavers in Wales and is published in the highly-ranked peer-reviewed journal, Critical Social Policy.
‘Austerity alive and well in Wales and UBI in intensive care’ is a rare focus in an international academic journal on a specifically made in Wales social policy area, namely the first universal basic income (UBI) pilot with care leavers anywhere in the world. The article discusses Welsh Government's intentions about the policy following the end of the pilot period in 2025 and offers key insights for its application.
Dr Hefin Gwilym commented, ‘It has been a pleasure writing another article with my former PhD student who now lectures in social policy in the University of Salford. I have followed his career with great interest and his expertise in food banks and UBI.’
This collaboration between a former PhD supervisor and now a doctoral graduate from Bangor demonstrates the excellent working relationships which can develop during our researcher’s experiences, as Dr David Beck comments:
‘Since completing my PhD research on food insecurity in 2018, Hefin and I have continued an excellent partnership of research and writing together. This continued partnership came from a development of shared interest in understanding the current social security system. Our work on social security developing UBI research across both Wales and England has led to several publications in high quality peer reviewed Social Policy journals and an increasing interest in these subjects for both undergraduate and postgraduate students including PhD students’.
