PhD Studies at the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies

Through the work of the scholars associated with the CPCS, Bangor University offers a PhD that consists of the conceiving, researching, writing, and defending a PhD thesis between 80,000-100,000 words in length excluding footnotes. The degree may be pursued part time over the course of four to six years depending on previous academic preparation and rate of progress. Whilst there is little institutional financial aid available for international part time PhD students, post grads may be able to secure student loans to cover costs through the normal channels as Bangor University has an institutional student aid number.

Centre for Pentecostal Theology in Cleveland

The PhD consists of attendance at and participation in the semi-annual seminars (May and November) hosted by the Centre for Pentecostal Theology in Cleveland, TN. During the seminars, PhD researchers hear from administrative representatives from Bangor University as well as have opportunity to present their own research to their peers and members of staff in this collegial context. The backbone of the program consists of regular individual supervisions with one’s PhD supervisor who offers guidance and engagement as one prepares ultimately to submit the thesis for formal examination by an external examiner and an internal examiner. The Viva, as it is known, takes place in Bangor and is likely the only time the student will have to travel to Bangor.

Admission

Admission to the PhD course of study depends on a relevant masters degree and an acceptable thesis proposal. As the proposal is of such strategic importance for admission, those seeking admission to the PhD are encouraged to be in contact with a member of staff, in the first instance, to determine whether a member of staff has interest in supervising the thesis topic. Bangor University has a rolling admissions policy so a PhD applicant may normally be able to begin their research at several points during the year after acceptance of the formal offer of a place to study.
