Bringing the Middle Ages into the digital age

Medieval history will now be accessible at the fingertips of Welsh medium students, thanks to the exciting development of digital resources by Bangor University and the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

The purpose of the project, which is led by the School of History, Welsh History and Archaeology at Bangor University and funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, is to promote the study of medieval history amongst university students and Year 12 and 13 secondary school pupils. 

In 2011 and 2012 two Welsh-medium lecturers were appointed in the field of medieval history, at Bangor and Aberystwyth Universities, through the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Academic Staffing Scheme. These new resources will further strengthen the Welsh medium provision already available in Welsh universities.

According to Cerys Hudson, Project Officer: "The resources will help students to discuss topics in Welsh and will be available to students in every university in Wales, and further afield. It is hoped that such resources will attract more students to study medieval history at university, as well as being of wider interest to anyone who wants to learn more about our past."

There will be a varied selection of sources published this month, including: Gerald of Wales, the Age of the Princesses in Wales, medieval historiography, extracts of translated sources, and quizzes. More resources will be added to the collection as the project progresses.
