ISWE at the Eisteddfod
We were delighted to take part in this year’s National Eisteddfod, held in Meifod, Powys, in early August. The University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hughes introduced a special ISWE lecture, delivered by the distinguished Welsh historian, Professor Prys Morgan.
In his lively address, Professor Morgan reflected on the historical influence of the Lloyd family of Dolobran – a country house situated within earshot of the Eisteddfod Maes. Prof. Morgan integrated the story of the Dolobran estate into a broader narrative of the impact of the gentry and their country houses in Welsh communities from medieval times through to the present day. In doing so, he highlighted many of the key themes, questions, issues and debates that will guide ISWE’s research priorities over the coming years; and underlined why fresh analyses of the role of estates in the history and development of Wales are so important.
