The mountains around Beddgelert made a fantastic venue for a student hike. Students and friends of the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering went on a hike around Beddgelert, at the end of Freshers week
It was great to hear about this hike. The university is situated in a unique location. It is near Snowdon, sits along the Menai Strait, with Anglesey nearby, features red squirrels, birds of prey, and Bangor itself highlights a Pier and its own small mountain (Bangor Mountain). Students and staff can study, research, and work, and take breaks by enjoying the countryside around the university.
The students hiked on the Beddgelert loop. The small town of Beddgelert is a pretty village in North Wales. It attracts many tourists, is known for its pretty mountain hikes and river walks. The village sits in the valley, at the join of River Glaslyn and the River Colwyn. With the pretty two-arched stone bridge at the centre of the village.
They started by walking along Pont Aberglaslyn. From the recent rain that had happened the river was full and fast flowing.
Continuing uphill took the hikers to the Pylons of the old Syngun Copper Mine.
From the old copper mine entrance, the hikers made their way to the top of Nantmor.
It was fun. I enjoyed leading and organising the group of students. We had a wonderful time hiking around Beddgelert and were awarded by a beautiful sunset. This hike has inspired me to setup a society at the university: the Backpacking Responsibly Outdoor Society, aka B.R.O.s.” Arthur went on to say “We are so privileged to study at a university that has such a fantastic location. I love doing computer science, but I also love walking in the wilderness. And Bangor University provides me with both possibilities.”
