Prof Anwei Feng: Key-Note Speech at International Conference, and More
From 20th to 29th April, 2012, Prof Anwei Feng was engaged in a series of academic activities both at home and abroad.
At the invitation of Shantou University, China, Prof Feng gave a key-note speech entitled ‘the ‘Third Wave’ — Spread of English across Greater China’ at the International Conference on Innovation and Integration in English Language Teaching: Rethinking Praxis in a Connected World, held on 20th – 22nd April 2012. The speech challenged the traditional ‘three concentric circles’ model to describe the use of English in the world by appropriating the ‘third wave’ concept as an alternative to examine the impact of the spread of the English language across the countries and territories broadly called Greater China. It triggered much interest in the audience who came from all over the world. At the same conference, he also led a two-hour seminar on trilingualism and trilingual education for minority students. At the final session, he served as a panel member to address questions on research and publication.
After the conference, Prof Feng flew thousands of miles from the southern city, Shantou, to the north-western city of Urumqi, Xinjiang. Over there, he spent three days giving lectures to researchers, language teachers and students of three universities, namely Xinjiang Normal University, Xinjiang Agriculture University and Xinjiang Institute of Education.
Upon returning to the UK, he attended the 15th International Cultnet Symposium held on 27th-29th April at Durham University. The most encouraging outcome was an initial agreement with colleagues from a number of European and Asian countries to conduct a joint project on internationalisation of higher education.
These academic activities have without doubt helped establish links between Bangor and universities abroad and put Bangor University firmly on the world map. They also have the potential to attract students and scholars to Bangor.
