Professor John G Hughes to Chair Higher Education Wales.
Less than a year after taking up his role as Bangor University’s seventh Vice- Chancellor, Professor John G. Hughes has been appointed Chair of Higher Education Wales.
Professor Hughes was elected by his fellow Vice-Chancellors and Principals to chair the group which represents the interests of all Universities in Wales. He will formally take up the post on 1 August 2011.
Professor John G Hughes said:
“I’m looking forward to representing the higher education sector in Wales in what is undoubtedly a period of historic change for universities.
“This is also a very challenging time and all our universities are determined to provide the best education possible and to contribute towards a prosperous future for Wales, economically, culturally and socially.”
Higher Education Wales promotes and supports higher education in Wales, representing the interest of its members to the National Assembly, the Westminster Parliament, political parties, European institutions and bodies, as well as negotiating on behalf of Welsh higher education.
Higher Education Wales also provides an expert resource on all aspects of higher education in Wales to the many interest stakeholders, including Assembly Members and Welsh MPs, the Welsh and UK media, students, staff, business leaders and industrial entrepreneurs.
Established in 1996 to represent the higher education sector in Wales, HEW is the national council in Wales of Universities UK.
