Using the social sciences to tackle poverty
Local sixth form students from Ysgol David Hughes, Ysgol Tryfan and Ysgol Friars attended a one-day conference at Bangor University on the 7th November to celebrate the Social Sciences and to discuss ideas for their Welsh Baccaulaureate assignments.
This one-day conference was part of the Festival of Social Sciences week and was one of many activities taking place throughout the UK.
The conference was entitled ‘Using the Social Sciences to Tackle Poverty’. Its purpose was to help the students meet some of the requirements for their Welsh Baccaulaureate qualification, including the Global Citizenship Challenge. Staff and PhD students from the School of Social Sciences delivered presentations on various topics, including poverty in Wales and world poverty; food poverty in North Wales; inequalities faced by Gypsies and travellers; poverty and crime; teenage pregnancies and poverty; and poverty and social insecurity.
In the afternoon students from Ysgol David Hughes presented feedback on a Poverty Conference they had recently attended at the Welsh Assembly. An afternoon workshop explored questions and areas of interest at greater depth. Lunch was provided by the Pay As You Feel Café, Bethesda.
Mrs. Delyth Williams, Welsh Baccalaureate Co-ordinator at Ysgol David Hughes said: ‘The students had a very beneficial day – several have made use of the day in their individual project and some have referred to the day in their personal statements!’
Dr. Hefin Gwilym, conference organiser said: ‘The interest and enthusiasm of the students and the contribution by Social Sciences staff and PhD students made it a very successful conference’.
