'Welsh in the Community' Discussion Panel
Innovative ideas to promote the use of Welsh in the community are to be shared at a ‘Welsh in the Community’ Discussion Panel on Wednesday 25th of October, 6.30-8pm, at Menter Iaith Bangor’s Popdy Centre, Lon Bopty, Bangor.
Experts who are involved in promoting Welsh in the community, both locally and nationally, will share some new ideas being used by community groups and businesses in Wales at the event.
The aim is to discuss the challenges and possible solutions that exist in trying to promote the Welsh language in the community with a focus on promoting Welsh among parents with young children, young people, leisure groups and learners.
Principal researcher, Dr Rhian Hodges of Bangor University’s School of Social Sciences, one of the event organisers, explained:
“This is a great opportunity to extend and develop the Toolkit for Promoting the Welsh Language which was launched during the summer. It’s beneficial to bring academics and practitioners together to discuss language planning strategies and how they are put into practice at a community level.”
Co-researcher and organiser, Dr Cynog Prys, also of Bangor University added: “It’s great to get representatives of the public and private sectors taking art in this Panel. Both sectors have an important role to play in promoting community language use. This is the first of two Discussion Panels to be held at the Popdy Centre as part of a new Popdy Trafod Iaith series organised by Bangor University and Menter Iaith Bangor to discuss community language matter”
The Toolkit and Discussion Panel are funded by the Bangor University ESRC Impact Acceleration Account and are based on a partnership with Mentrau Iaith Cymru. The Package contains practical examples of methods to promote Welsh in the community, drawing upon examples from eight localities across Wales: Bangor, Porthmadog, Llanrwst, Wrexham, Aberystwyth, Cardigan, Ammanford and Caerphilly.
The Panel will be part of the Menter Iaith Bangor Popdy Trafod Iaith series. Light refreshments will be provided.
Participating in the Discussion Panel are:
• Menter Iaith Conwy
• The Urdd
• the National Welsh Learning Centre
• Amser Babi Cymraeg (ABC)
