Choosing your Modules
Choice within your programme of study
We operate a modular scheme of study at Bangor which means that all courses comprise ‘blocks of learning’ called modules. All of our modules have a credit value which indicates how many credits you will achieve if you successfully complete it. Undergraduate courses comprise modules totalling 120 credits per year of full-time study.
Registering for the right number of modules
If you are a full-time student you will have to register for a total of 120 credits during the academic year 2022/23 (equating to the equivalent of 1,200 hours of learning time over the year, i.e., 30 weeks of full-time stu/dy over the two semesters with a total of 40 learning hours per week). You are advised to take 60 credits in each semester so that your work is evenly spread, however there may be good reason why you want to follow a different pattern to that and our rules will allow you to take a 70/50 or 50/70 credit split across the year.
Some modules will be compulsory for your course but there may also be optional modules for you to choose from. For the majority of courses you will be able to make your module choice as part of the online enrolment process and for others your Personal Tutor or other School advisor will be able to help you choose.
Choosing modules outside your main School
You may wish to take modules outside your main subject area, e.g., you may choose to learn a new languages or attain competence in Information Technology – there are a number of modules to choose from and this is why your tutor and School advice sessions are important. One ‘constraint’ on your choice is the teaching timetable, and it will be necessary for you to check that the modules you want to choose do not clash with each other.
In order to assist you in choosing your modules we provide a Gazette which details all of the modules on offer in 2022/23.
You can make changes up to two weeks after the start of each semester, but you must make sure that you follow the correct procedure to ensure that the University’s record of your registration is correct.
Languages for All
The Languages for All scheme – funded by the University and Erasmus+ – has made it possible for all registered Bangor University students to enrol on one module per semester FREE OF CHARGE (subject to availability). The scheme offers free evening classes for students in five languages: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin).
These modules are offered only in audit mode – that means there will be no formal assessment and no credits will be awarded on completion of the modules.
The 10-week courses cater for a variety of levels - from beginners to learners who may want to brush up rusty language skills. All face-to-face sessions will be delivered in New Arts (Lecture Rooms 1-5) and Main Arts (Drama Rehearsal Room) buildings.
