Solar photovoltaics (PV) are at the forefront of renewable energy technologies, playing a critical role in the global effort to achieve Net Zero emissions. As one of the most cost-effective renewable energy sources available today, solar PV continues to gain prominence due to its decreasing costs and growing efficiency. This technology, which converts sunlight directly into electricity, is not only vital for reducing carbon footprints but also for promoting sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
On the 21st Febrary 2024, as part of the Engage Lecture series, Dr. Noel Bristow provided a comprehensive overview of solar electricity generation, covering everything from the fundamental physics of solar cells to the practical aspects of planning and constructing solar farms. Dr. Bristow’s session explored various materials used in solar cells, their electrical properties, and how to evaluate the performance of solar panels under different conditions, including how when the sun is shaded it substantially has a detrimental effect on the voltage output.
Dr. Bristow, who earned his BSc in Microelectronics and Computer Systems Engineering from University College of North Wales (UCNW) Bangor in 1988, brings a wealth of experience to the topic. After spending two decades as a computer consultant, he transitioned into the renewable energy sector, completing an MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology at Loughborough University in 2008. His expertise provided attendees with a thorough understanding of solar PV technology, equipping them with the knowledge needed to contribute to a sustainable energy future.
This event highlighted the importance of solar energy in the transition to a greener economy and underscored the growing interest in renewable technologies to combat climate change. Dr. Bristow’s presentation not only addressed the technical aspects of solar PV but also encouraged participants to engage with the subject matter, answering questions that many had been hesitant to ask.
As the world moves closer to embracing renewable energy on a larger scale, solar PV remains a key player in the pursuit of sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly electricity generation.
