Dr Craig Shuttleworth
Honorary Visiting Research Fellow
Overview
I have spent thirty years studying the population ecology of red and grey squirrels in Europe and western Canada. My work is currently focussed on pine marten translocation in North Wales.

Teaching and Supervision
I frequently supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate research, offering local field based studies on Anglesey or in Gwynedd.
Research Interests
My research encompasses viral epidemiological studies with a focus upon Squirrel pox, Adenovirus and Rota virus in sciurid populations; genetic surveillance of red and grey squirrel populations in Europe and North America, wildlife translocation and invasive species management.
I am currently managing the reintroduction of pine marten into North Wales and red squirrel in Clocaenog forest in the North East.

- Using remote activated cameras to estimate relative abundance and habitat preference of red squirrels
Population estimates are essential for the conservation of wildlife. However, accurate estimates can be labour-intensive, particularly for small and medium-sized mammals where capture and handling of individuals is often required. Our study aimed to provide a robust and standardised method of determining red squirrel abundance using remotely activated cameras, while also quantifying how red squirrel abundance relates to key habitat characteristics. Fifty sample points were selected in four habitat categories in forests across Anglesey. We found a strong correlation (r = 0.78) between the number of red squirrels live-trapped over ten-days with the number of camera images recorded during a five-day period. Red squirrel abundance was negatively related to stand canopy openness, while the presence of Scots pine and increased tree species diversity were positively related to squirrel abundance. Our results demonstrate that remotely activated cameras can provide a suitable tool for surveying red squirrel abundance and guiding habitat management.

Zoological red squirrel collections provide publicly exhibited specimens which are frequently the only opportunity for communities to see this rare native species and to learn about the threats posed to remnant wild populations. Collections are also an important resource for conservation translocation.
This guidance builds upon historical recommendations for the management and husbandry of captive collections1, evolves the co-ordination of the national studbook and integrates key IUCN guidance2 on the selection of animals for any proposed wild release.
The maintenance of an effective studbook requires agreement and mutual co-operation. Although this document presents a current best practice, we recognise that management must be adaptive and consequently that the text is a foundation for collaboration and the sharing of future lessons learned and knowledge.
