Over many months, Electronic Engineering alumni Mike Riley (1975) and Alec McCalden (1976) have worked to bring together a public archive of student-led radio broadcasting based in Bangor, and we're delighted that they have agreed to share it as part of Bangor University's 140th anniversary celebrations.
Primarily focussed on the 1970s and 1980s, the collection reflects a time before the online world where streaming, websites and social media were still well in the future, and broadcast radio was an even more important cultural mechanism than today. The story of these times that they have compiled brings together great application of technology along with infectious enthusiasm to show what was possible in a somewhat isolated broadcasting landscape.
We have a web archive with the full story of the Bangor Rag Broadcasting System, which includes many sound clips and images from the time.
Congratulations to Mike and Alec for compiling such an interesting archive and many thanks to them for their hard work in bringing it all together for us all to enjoy. If you have any comments or questions on the work, please contact Bethan Perkins, Alumni Relations Officer, on b.w.perkins@bangor.ac.uk who will pass on your queries.
