Online Dictionary highlights contribution of University
The pioneering work of the Language Technologies Unit at Canolfan Bedwyr will be highlighted as the Welsh Language Board launches an online version of Geiriadur yr Academi, the Welsh Academy English-Welsh Dictionary.
Since its first publication in 1995, the Dictionary, a masterpiece by Bruce Griffiths and Dafydd Glyn Jones, both former lecturers at the University, has been all key resource for anyone using Welsh daily at their work-place.
Thanks to the expertise of staff at Canolfan Bedwyr, the dictionary, containing over 90,000 records, is now available free on the website of the Welsh Language Board.
Launching an online version of the Dictionary, the Chief Executive of the Welsh Language Board, Meirion Prys Jones:
"I am extremely pleased to see the online dictionary become a reality, and that the Board has invested in the work. I’d like to pay thanks to Canolfan Bedwyr and Bangor University for their contribution and technical expertise, and also to all proofreaders the length and breadth of Wales who have been conscientiously checking to ensure that the records have been transferred to the digital format, preserving the resource forever. "
