On 10th November, colleagues from Cardiff Confucius Institute, Lancaster Confucius Institute, local primary and secondary schools, Bangor University and friends from the local community came together to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute, an organisation offering the Chinese language and culture to everyone interested.
The Confucius Institute at Bangor University provides learning, teaching, and testing and supports education exchanges with its partner university: the China University of Political Science and Law. The institute became a well-regarded centre of Chinese language teaching thanks to the joint efforts of both partner universities and the hardworking and dedicated local and Chinese staff.
The celebratory event was hosted by Dr Davitt, Director of the Confucius Institute and included a congratulatory speech from Prof Martina Feilzer, the Dean of the College of Humanities. The guests were mesmerised by a feast of traditional Chinese music, opera and dance performances from Beijing Dance Academy students currently hosted by Goldsmiths University’s Confucius Institute. Everyone enjoyed the dance performances of the Welsh Folk Dance Society from Caernarfon and joined in a guided group dance at the end of the evening.
Professor Martina Feilzer, Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Business, commented.
‘The Confucius Institute has not only enriched Bangor’s cultural life but has also enabled the learning of the Mandarin language and understanding of Chinese culture in local schools and the wider communities. The Confucius Institute serves as a reminder that individuals come to Bangor University from all over the world to be a part of our community. We embrace them, which impacts their lives as they profoundly impact ours. On behalf of Bangor University, I wish the Institute all the best in the coming years and keep up the excellent work!’
