This is a part-time, level 7 postgraduate short course delivered online.
Who is this course for?
This short course is aimed at medical and healthcare professionals with responsibility for patients care, quality & safety.
This course will be of interest to doctors, pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapist, radiography, and all allied health professionals from other professions.
Why study this course?
This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to critically evaluate the concept of quality within healthcare, and the foundations of different approaches to improving quality.
During this module, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the relevant research and scholarly approaches applicable to quality improvement in healthcare and an informed knowledge of how the results of this application may improve service processes and outcomes and develop practice, research ideas/policy. This will enable you to drive forward improvements in a modern healthcare setting.
Students will be taught to apply appropriate methods for advancing thinking and practice within the context of a healthcare quality challenge relevant to your organisations priorities and learn how to resolve complex organisational and practice issues to drive forward quality improvements in practice.
How long does this course take to complete?
This short course is spread over 6 weeks and starts on the Wednesday 17th January 2024
Students will study this course for 1 day a week (Wednesday) from 9am to 5pm.

Carol is an Adult Nurse Lecturer and Programme Lead for the Part time Bachelor of Nursing , as well as Co–Deputy for the MSc in Leading Quality Improvements and module lead for the Approaches to Quality Module.
Carol has 34 years of experience in the Welsh Healthcare system; as an experienced nurse and health services researcher in leadership and quality improvements in practice
Course Content
What will you study on this course?
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the approaches, frameworks and tools to drive forward quality and quality improvements within healthcare and the key drivers and regulations in relation to NHS, so that they will be able to apply these effectively within the practice setting.
This module introduces the concept of quality in healthcare both as a theoretical concept and as a fundamental feature of the health services and healthcare. Encompassing of three themes: effectiveness, efficiency and acceptability, we will also explore how healthcare quality is influenced and how it can be effectively measured and evaluated. Drawing on a range of theory and evidence, the module also examines the different approaches to improving quality within healthcare.

- Exploration of external drivers and contextual influences that shape the adoption of different approaches to improvement, and how quality challenges are framed.
- Legislative, governance and professional issues in quality and service improvement.

- Evidence base practice and approaches to implementation.
- Securing improvement: Co-production and other approaches employed to achieve best practice.
- UK and international perspectives in quality and service improvement
- Developing analytic frameworks to support service improvement and outcomes.

- Click on ‘Non-graduating applications / Stand alone Modules’, then select ‘Non-graduating Postgraduate’.
- In the next section, select Non-Graduating Taught Modules in Health(NGGT/HEALTH) Click Save and Continue.
- On the next page, the default for the first question is Full Time. You need to change this to ‘Part time’:
- You now need to input the module code. Approaches in Health Quality : the code is NHS-4379 . This section must be completed for your application to be processed.
- You also need to state the start date. Please make your selection, then click ‘Save and Continue’.
- IMPORTANT: You do not need to write a personal statement to apply for this course. Instead, please upload the document including employment, experience and education information that you have created prior to starting the application that contains the name of your current employer, the number of years of experience you have, and your highest qualification to date. Click Save and continue.
You only need to enter the details of your highest qualification to date, e.g. if you have a postgraduate qualification, please only only include this.
You will be asked for evidence of the qualification. Please either upload a copy of your qualification if it's easily accessible or upload the Word document again (that you prepared earlier).
