This is a part-time, level 7 short course delivered on our Bangor campus, with some content accessed online (blended learning method).
Who is this course for?
This short course is aimed at Healthcare Professionals from any discipline, holding a relevant UK Professional registration, who are or wish to become Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
Why study this course?
This module provides learners with an opportunity to develop and explore the principles of Advanced Clinical Practice and enables you to apply and embed this knowledge within your workplace.
The multi-professional nature of this short course provides a valuable opportunity for professionals to share their knowledge and skills on the role of the Advanced Clinical Practitioner. Based on this there is a strong emphasis on inter-professional learning, and collaboration with your fellow students is encouraged.
This module will facilitate and enable you to apply the knowledge, practice and skills required to underpin the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice:
- Clinical Practice
- Education
- Leadership
- Research
Prior to the module there is a need for you to identify an Advanced Clinical Practice mentor in your area of work, to enable and support you to develop an Advanced Practice Portfolio.
How long does this course take to complete?
This part time course is spread over 6 months, running from October 2024 until April 2025.
Module dates for 2024:
On Campus:
Three days of the module will be delivered at our Bangor campus:
- 11th October 2024 – Introduction to module
- 25th October 2024 – Preparation for online discussion forums
- 15th March 2025 - Portfolio workshop
Online Learning:
- Structured online learning in the form of preparation and participation in discussion forums will be equivalent to 18 days (1/2 days) between October 2024 until March 2025.
Workplace Learning:
- Workplace learning with your clinical mentor. A minimum of three formal meetings to develop your Advanced Practice Portfolio.
- Development of Advanced Practice Portfolio
Assessment
Assessments on this short course will include:
- a minimum of 800 words across four discussion forums, which will be specific to the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice. Contributions will be continuous over the 6 months of the short course. Final submission will be April 2025
- a 3,000 word reflective assignment based upon your learning experiences as trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners during the module. Submission will be in May 2025
- the development and maintenance of an Advanced Clinical Practice portfolio, in collaboration with your clinical mentor. Submission will be in April 2025
Tutor
Julie Lunt
Julie is the lead for the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice for Allied Healthcare Professionals at Bangor University.
Julie qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1992 and as an independent prescriber in 2007, completing MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice in 2017.
Julie has 30 years of experience within primary care, with a specialist interest in cardiology.
Course Content
What will you study on this course?
The learning aims of this level 7 short course will be to enable the learner to:
- Demonstrate critical understanding of the principles of clinical reasoning and evidence based practice within the Frameworks of Advanced Practice
- Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse and apply a broad range and depth of theory that underpins the advanced practice role and show understanding of the impact of the role on innovative service development and delivery through developing and modernising working practices
- Explore a comprehensive range of legislation and policy drivers and fully recognise their impact on advanced practice roles
- Explore and critically analyse the principles of governance that guide working within accepted boundaries as well as professional accountability, capability and competence of the advanced practitioner role
- Explore and critically appraise the development of inter-professional working for advanced practitioners and identify and discern the changing role and responsibilities that advanced practitioners may undertake that were previously the domain of other professionals
- Undertake a detailed analysis of the principles of delivery of high quality of care and apply to advanced practice
- Undertake an analytical exploration of the need to respond effectively and flexibly to new models of care to enhance service development and delivery within health, social care and the third sector.
Learning units
This module is organised into learning units that may cover the following topics:
- 4 pillars of advanced practice: Practice, Education, Research and Management Leadership.
- Theory underpinning advanced clinical practice
- Clinical reasoning, accountability and evidence based practice applied to the advanced clinical practice role.
- Developing and maintaining an advanced clinical practice portfolio
- Legislation and policy drivers for enhancing and modernising service delivery in health and social care and the third sector
- Modernising service development and delivery in health, social care and the third sector
- Inter-professional working within advanced clinical practice

Entry Requirements
Applicants will require an undergraduate degree at 2:2 or higher, and must fulfil the following criteria to be considered eligible for this course:
- Any registrant HCPC, GPhC & NMC or Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPH).
If you do not meet the academic requirements detailed above but have at least 3 years of relevant work experience and have evidence of recent study or professional development (to demonstrate an ability to study at level 7) we may consider your application.

When a section is complete, a ‘tick’ symbol will appear below it
- Click on ‘Non-graduating applications / Stand alone Modules’, then select ‘Non-graduating Postgraduate Taught’.
- In the next section, select Non-Graduating Taught Modules in Health(NGGT/HEALTH) Click Save and Continue.
- On the next page, the default for the first question is Full Time. You need to change this to ‘Part time’:
- You now need to input the module code. Developing Advanced Practice: the code is NHS:4375. This section must be completed for your application to be processed.
- You also need to state the start date. Please make your selection, then click ‘Save and Continue’.
- IMPORTANT: You do not need to write a personal statement to apply for this course. Instead, please upload the document including employment, experience and education information that you have created prior to starting the application that contains the name of your current employer, the number of years of experience you have, and your highest qualification to date. Click Save and continue.
You only need to enter the details of your highest qualification to date, e.g. if you have a postgraduate qualification, please only only include this.
You will be asked for evidence of the qualification. Please either upload a copy of your qualification if it's easily accessible, or upload the Word document again (that you prepared earlier).
