Overview
Theatre Making is an opportunity to be introduced to the subject area of theatre and performance. To explore within practical workshops, how to create your own performance work with a group of other people, how can someone devise an original play, and develop as an actor, director, writer, designer…in making live work.
Production processes will be explored, visits to see live performances and digital performance work will be viewed with an exciting opportunity to create your very own performance piece by the end of term. You’re welcome to perform, write, direct the performance work within a safe environment to explore and experiment.
- What is performance?
- How can we create live work on the 21st Century stage?
- What are all the production elements involved in a devised performance?
- How selected theatre traditions challenged and enhanced the notion of performance and the theatre.
Assessment Strategy
Threshold (D- to D+):Submitted work is adequate and shows an acceptable level of competence as follows:1. Generally accurate but with omissions and errors.2. Assertions are made without clear supporting evidence or reasoning.3. Has structure but is lacking in clarity and therefore relies on the reader to make links and assumptions.4. Draws on a relatively narrow range of material.
Satisfactory to Good (C- to C+) Submitted work is competent with a demonstration of knowledge and understanding of the subject area present. 1. Demonstrates good structure and some logically developed arguments.2. Draws mostly on material that has been sourced and assessed from the module with some limited independent study.3. Assertions are backed by evidence and good reasoning.4. Accuracy and presentation in an appropriate academic and professional style present.
Good to Very Good (B- to B+):Submitted work is competent and very good throughout and may be distinguished by superior style, approach and choice of supporting materials.1. Demonstrates good or very good structure and logically developed arguments.2. Draws at least in parts on material that has been sourced and assessed as a result of independent study, or in a way unique to the student.3. Assertions are backed by evidence and sound reasoning.4. Accuracy and presentation in an appropriate academic and professional style.
Excellent (A- to A+):Submitted work is of an outstanding quality and excellent in one or more of the following ways:1. Has originality of exposition with the student’s own thinking being readily apparent.2. Provides clear evidence of extensive and relevant independent study.3. Arguments are laid down with clarity and provide the reader with successive stages of consideration to reach conclusions.

Description
Performance Review Assignment 1: Performance Review Question: What insights can be derived from applying the Pavis method of analysis to a live theatre production? Choose no more than two aspects (eg acting, mise en scene, lighting, costume etc) of the Pavis model of analysis. Apply these to a live performance that you have seen. From this analysis you should derive an interpretation of the play that you argue for in your short essay, referring to your analysis. In your essay you must briefly explain the Pavis method and why you have chosen to focus on particular aspects you have chosen (lighting, acting etc). You should make reference to at least 5 sources (this must include some scholarly texts and can also include films, internet sources, reviews, programme notes, plays, etc) and cite these correctly using academic protocol.

Description
Short Group Production The groups will devise a short (20mins) performance based on a selected theatre and performance tradition from the course. You will devise a group performance drawing on ideas studied in the module and will be expected to apply practice-led research, individually and as a group. You must decide on how you are going to approach or treat the performance material in order that the themes you have identified are vivified for an audience. You will work in groups for this assignment, so most of the marks will be group marks, however individual achievement is also taken into consideration. Assessment will take place during class time hours in the final week of term.
