It is often assumed that the Enlightenment marked the end of religion and superstition, ushering in an era of scientific logic and rational thought. However, this lecture challenges that notion, arguing that magical ways of thinking persist into the modern age. Focusing on warfare—specifically World War I and World War II in Europe—we will examine the use of magical symbols and talismans within the military, some of which were officially sanctioned and encouraged by governments. By exploring the material culture of the period, we will investigate how these objects were used, what they reveal about soldiers’ beliefs, and why they remain significant in understanding both the past and present.
