Bangor History at the NAASWCH conference, Harvard
Between the 20th and 22nd of July several members of staff and PhD students from the School, alongside collegues from Schools including English, Social Sciences and Modern Languages took part in the North American Association for the Study of Welsh Culture and History (or NAASWCH) biennial conference held at Harvard University. A wide variety of papers covering the vast range of disciplines that together compose the indisciplinary field of Welsh Studies. Papers presented by the SHWHA contingent ranged from Wales and Medieval Queenship, the experience of life on a nineteenth century Welsh country estate, the unlikely role Bangor University played in preserving the National Art Collection through to the representation of 'Sunny Rhyl' in seaside emphemera. Postgraduates from the School presented on the role of Undeb Cymru Fydd and the role of Roy Jenkins in the development of race relations legislation. A variety of keynotes, from the likes of former First Minister Rhodri Morgan and actor Matthew Rhys, completed what was a wide ranging and intellectually stimulating event.
