Fully-funded PhD Studentship: WISERD Civil Society

Duration: 3 Years
Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship, funded by WISERD within the School of Social Sciences at Bangor University, beginning 1st October 2015 or soon thereafter. We are interested in receiving proposals to pursue research in any one of the following areas:
- The impact of social change on participation, volunteering or third sector organisations
- The development of civil society in societies undergoing nation-building, decentralised government or political change
- The use of innovative qualitative or mixed methods to explore any aspect of civil society across time and space.
The project will be based in the School of Social Sciences, Bangor University, and is funded by the ESRC WISERD Civil Society research centre. For more information on WISERD see their website.

Funding
Studentship is generously funded by the School of Social Sciences/WISERD. It consists of full UK/EU fees, as well as a doctoral stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,167 p.a. for 2014/15, updated each year).
Additional funding of £750 p. a. is available in the form of a Research & Training grant.
Eligibility
Candidates should have an excellent academic background in the social sciences, holding a 1st or upper 2nd class undergraduate degree and also a Masters degree (preferably an ESRC recognised Masters or an equivalent background in research training). Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements.

A 1,000 word research proposal - Applicants should provide this in a separate word document. It should include a statement of the research problem, design and methodology, as well as references to existing research in the field of civil society.
