Maritime history award for Bangor student
The School of History, Welsh History and Archaeology is pleased to announce that History Student Brython Wyn Edwards, who is currently in the final year of a 4-year MArts course, has been awarded a prize for undergraduate achievement in maritime history by the British Commission for Maritime History. The prize was awarded for an excellent third-year dissertation focussing on the history of the Kingdom of Man and the Isles in the 12th and 13th centuries.
The school is incredibly proud of this achievement and according to Brython’s dissertation supervisor, Owain Jones, ‘not only has Brython looked at a neglected area of medieval history, but he has focussed on a period neglected even by Manx historians, the reign of the last king of Man, Magnus Olafsson, and has set this original study effectively in the context of the development of larger, more centralised polities in Scotland and Norway’. Brython’s work was also praised by external examiner Dr Charles Insley (Univ. of Manchester) for tackling ‘a phenomenally difficult and under-evidenced topic with skill and no little originality’.
